It would be nice if your wooden home stayed in good shape with only a little bit of house repair maintenance. Only caulk and scrape a bit, toss down some painting drop cloths, and roll on some layers of durable house paint.
Well, it just is not so easy. Rather than easy, you usually have to repair the wooden surface of your house.
My roughly twenty-five year old home needed quite a bit of work. The galvanized sheet metal edging of my original roof was badly done and permitted rain to repeatedly dampen the wood behind the eve. Over time, these facing boards shrunk and the protective coat of paint flaked.
I researched how to get it done right. I was sure that regular wood filler would do the job.
My friend down the block repaired his wooden home often fighting those darn flying termites. This guy’s work quality stood the test of time. I asked him his secret.

Bondo was great for car dents. Bondo kept its shape. This auto filler permitted sanding and lathing. When he brought up using this auto filler, I instantly knew that repairs done this way would work.
When making repairs, the trick is to make repairs in steps with big gobs initially and then thinner layers at the end. You can even make nice sharp corners, if you use wood molding and wax paper. To prep for painting by sanding all you need to do is to use one of the discount power tools to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
For those of you who own a wood deck, you could also apply this auto patcher to fill in gouges in the planks of a wood deck design. It comes in handy, when you are preping a redwood deck for staining.
Note the fact that Bondo has a distinctive light reddish color and this will show through, when using a transparent water proofing on a wooden deck. If you want to seal a wooden deck after patching with Bondo, just cover it with prime and painting.
Finally you do not need to find an auto parts store to get Bondo. You can get Bondo at Lowes or Home Depot. Incidentally, my wood repair still looks great after several years.
