Can you find purebred cats in animal shelters or is it very rare?

If yes, are cats in animal shelters neutered/spayed or do they have potent ones also?

Kittens of particular breeds aren’t found at shelters. They only come from the mating of pedigreed cat to pedigreed cat and breeders sell them for $600 and up. And anyone buying a kitten from a breeder that then can no longer keep it is obligated to return the kitten to the breeder. Many microchip their kittens so if they do end up at a shelter they’ll get them back.

Cats, yes – occasionally. Especially breeds like the Persian which are VERY high maintenance. Too many people buy them without research the daily grooming they require and then either surrender them to shelters or simply toss them out on the streets.

You don’t, however, normally find “obvious purebreds” that come with their papers. Once in a great while someone will turn in the pedigreed as well but that’s pretty rare. That doesn’t mean, though, that these cats can’t still end up competing in cat shows as there’s a “Household Pet” class you can still put them into – which is for pedigreed cats that don’t fit their breed standard, obvious purebreds without papers and cats of no particular breed.

I have three cats that were adopted as adults from shelters that are “obvious purebreds”. The first two, well, you just can’t “fake” the look of those breeds. The RagaMuffin I was able to track where she came from since I volunteer with the shelter and found out she’d originally come from a RagaMuffin breeder that had closed her cattery:

edit: sorry missed your question about whether they’re spayed/neutered. Yes they are absolutely spayed and neutered. Besides that – breeders don’t tend to hand out unaltered kittens so in most cases they already would be. That’s very irresponsible of you to think you could get unaltered pedigreed cats from a shelter and then breed them. You wouldn’t have papers for the cat so even it was unaltered no breeder would allow your cat to mate with theirs. The ONLY people who should be breeding cats are reputable breeders doing so for the RIGHT reasons – for the love of and to better the breed.
