Star Trek Fancy Dress
One of my favorite science fiction television programs of all time is Star Trek, above all the original series. There were such excellent characters in the series – Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Scottie … I visualized boldly going where no man has gone before. How exciting to explore new planets and to encounter alien creatures like the Klingons! When I have a fancy dress event, my first thought is to choose a character from Star Trek to dress up as.
Did you know that Star Trek has been going since the sixties? There have been numerous movies and five television series in that time. Star Trek (2009) recounts the early years of the Star Trek crew and is the latest Star Trek movie. You can’t have failed to observe that the uniforms they wear are really important and denote their rank on the Starship USS Enterprise. The command crew can be recognized by their gold colored tunic. Gold is a very appropriate color for the commanding officers being such a precious metal. It certainly looked quite handsome on Captain Kirk. The command officers’ shirts are gold in the 2009 movie but have the new addition of a Starfleet emblem woven into the fabric.
Are you a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation with Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard? I never got into it personally. Here the color of the uniform was changed with the tunic being red and black for the command crew and yellow/gold for the operations and engineering crew.
My favorite costume is that of Mr. Spock, half-vulcan in his blue tunic. I was always fascinated by his logical thought. If you’re going to a fancy dress event, it’s easier to be recognized as Mr. Spock because of the pointy ears! If you wear the Spock costume, don’t forget the Vulcan “live long and prosper” salute. You do this by raising your hand, palm forward and part you fingers between the middle and ring finger with the thumb extended. Leonard Nimoy came up with the salute. It’s based upon a hand sign used by Jewish Rabbis.
If you’re a woman, you may be a fan of Nichelle Nichols who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in the original series. Did you know that she was one of the first major black characters in an American TV series? The name Nyota Uhura comes from the Swahili language and means “Star Freedom”. I thought Uhura’s short red dress was very sexy. The black boots and large hoop earrings helped.
