how can the space shuttle get enough Delta-V to achieve trans lunar injection?
is it feasible to attach some booster or propellant force?
i know, it would be hauling junk such as orbiter wings not need to go to the moon, given that the whole apollo spacecraft, with CM, SM and LM combined could fit in the cargo bay? but what if they could?
I once read a scenario where a couple shuttle launches were used to achieve trans lunar injection.
First an empty shuttle goes up, and does not eject its external fuel tank.
Then another empty shuttle goes up, and also does not eject the fuel tank.
Then fuel and oxidant is transferred from one shuttle to the other, resulting in a fully fueled shuttle in low earth orbit. This shuttle is then able to achieve trans-lunar injection.
This scenario requires two untried exercises: not ejecting a fuel tank, and transferring fuel in orbit.
