What can I do to make bricks in a model set?

I am building a model for a scenic design class and I am trying to build bricks in 1/4″ – 1″ scale. I need them to look like they are falling apart and decaying.

I’ve been studying earth building techniques, including adobe, and compressed earth blocks. Those ideas would probably work in miniature, too. The keys are clay subsoil that has a sand content of about 1/2. I think you could also make your bricks of wood, and smear clay subsoil on them to make them look like falling apart and decaying bricks. The clay subsoil to make this work is pretty common in a lot of places – dig below the topsoil, and get to the sticky stuff below. You might need to work in a little sand to make it workable. I bet it’s all the building material you need.
