How memory foam mattresses can help you get a good night’s sleep

These days there are many different types of mattress to choose from. At bed shops around the country you’ll find many, many different types of mattress in showrooms, quite often with many people testing them out to find the right one for them. There is one newer variety of mattresses that many people are noticing but it doesn’t come cheap: Memory foam.

Memory foam, or Visco-Elastic polyurethane foam to give it its full name, is a foam material than becomes more flexible and elastic when heat is applied. The material was created by NASA researchers tasked with creating safer seat cushioning for shuttle and rocket launches. The material did its job and in the 1980s was revealed to the public.

Shortly afterwards memory foam was adopted by a mattress manufacturer to provide better support and comfort in their bed range. The foam is very dense and so whilst cool it remains hard, but when you lie on it your body heat then begins to make certain areas of the mattress adapt to your body.

The use of memory foam mattresses has been seen as a great move forward for orthopaedic related injuries or conditions. The mattress has the benefit of supporting the body in a comfortable and natural way. These mattresses have better capabilities than the traditional spring based mattress and are less costly than the motorised adjustable beds.

The cost of a memory foam mattress though can be quite high; it is considerably more than a regular mattress but for those who have the extra money they will quickly notice the benefits. Not everyone may find memory foam mattresses to be the best option for them though. A feature of memory foam is than with reduced airflow around your body you will stay warm very easily.

This could be either great if you often find that you are cold in bed but if you are a warm sleeper and often find yourself uncomfortable from the heat then you could find that memory foam can add to this and not get a very good night’s sleep. Many people find that they prefer the firm support of the spring based mattress and so this is another reason to make sure you test mattresses in the shop before committing to buy.

This is an important part of selecting any mattress as you want to know that it is comfortable for you. Memory foam mattresses may be expensive but if it means you get a comfortable and pleasant night’s sleep then it will be money well spent.
