Refit Warp
I have a 2002 AU III Ford Falcon with head gasket problem…?
I know that if the head is warped/cracked than its better to replace the engine. But the high price to replace a head gasket is only 100 dollars less than to supply and refit a 2nd hand engine……wouldn’t that mean that in most cases its far better to go out and supply and fit another engine than to stick with the old engine and have mechanics pull the whole thing apart just to replace a silly headgasket. I also worry that once a 2nd hand engine is fitted they will only give you a lousy 3month warranty on it….
Its unusual for head problems in this model, more common in pre 98.
As for pulling the whole thing to pieces? replacing a head and gasket is relativly simple, but labour intensive, hence the cost if you can’t do it yourself.
You don’t say how many kms it’s done, if it’s over 200,000, then a reconditioned head should put it to rights for another 100,000 or more, this model taxi are well known for exceeding 700,000 without major problems.
If it’s showing signs off wear, such as blowing smoke, noisy, etc, then by all means, change the motor, but beware, you will get what you pay for, make sure you have the motor checked over, before and after it’s fitted, by someone mechanically minded.
If you are planning on keeping the car in the long term, then consider going for a reconditioned motor.
