Guide to Painting with Smoke

Most of us have dabbled in painting a few times in our lives. The medium that you choose to work with is a fundamental determination that must be made during the design phase of your project. Traditionally, the act of painting involves a canvas or any other flat surface upon which the picture will be created; it also involves choosing the right medium that shell be worked with to paint the image. Watercolors, acrylics, and charcoal are among the most popular media that are used.

For the more daring, there is a totally different technique involving smoke. The technique being referred to is painting with smoke or fumage. It was developed and initially used by Wolfgang Paalen who used smoke emanating from a candle to create images on a canvas. The resulting images are surreal, and might even be disturbing, owing to the totally unexpected forms that can be conjured using smoke. If you are intrigued by such a concept and want to try out this technique for an upcoming project, here are a few simple steps to help you learn how to paint with smoke.

Spend some time to imagine your anticipated design in your mind. As with any creative project, the very first step that must be performed is visualization. Not all of us have the ability to see clear pictures in our minds. Thus, it is a wonderful idea to envision the complete picture that you want to bring to life by manually sketching the picture or by using a form of computer software that will let you produce a basic drawing. Because of the nature of the medium, do your best to keep the designs unassuming and/or abstract (e.g., rudimentary shapes, human forms).

Assemble your chosen materials. A kerosene lamp or candles are examples of tools that make smoke that can be ideally used for this type of project. Beginners will likely be better suited to using candles of varying wick thicknesses and lengths. This is because longer wicks produce smoother patterns, while shorter ones produce solid and dark shades and forms. Using these will allow you to come up with varied images with different intensities or shading. Other than the candles and canvas, you must also have items that will protect you eyes and hands, such as gloves and goggles.

Paint with smoke. After choosing a safe workplace where there is no risk of anything burning, you may begin the process of painting. First, prop up the canvas in such a way that you can move it about while you paint. You might need to paint from the side or beneath the canvas. The next step is to begin designing by using one of your candles to apply the shading. To produce various shades, keep in mind that the angle and speed that you move the candle flame across the surface is crucial. If you are hesitant, try doing some practice strokes on a different canvas prior to applying anything to your actual work. Part of the fun is allowing the creative juices flow by experimenting with different methods of practicing fumage.

Apply the finishing touches. Once you are finished, don’t forget to spray fixative on the finished work. This is done in order to preserve the image that was created.
