Has global warming lost it’s mascot?
In a ground breaking discovery an Icelandic scientist has found the jawbone of a polar bear that carbon dates to 110-130 thousand years old.

This indicates that the divergence of the polar bear species from the brown bear species possibly occurred prior to the last inter-glacial period (with an approximate 10% margin of error) which in turn could negate the hysteria of polar bear extinction due to global warming. Furthermore this brings up an interesting yet often neglected aspect of planetary health: adaptation.
While the pro-AGW crowd predicts the end of civilization if immediate and drastic measures are not taken to reduce CO2 emissions, have they neglected the basic ability of individuals, species, communities and civilization to adapt to change?

Well, actually, some polar bears ARE adapting to the changes in the Arctic — they’re interbreeding with grizzly (brown) bears from the mainland. Which plays havoc with hunters, who have to get licenses to hunt, and end up in legal hot water because they shot the “wrong” kind of bear.

The big problem for polar bears is not whether or not they CAN adapt to warming, but whether or not they’ll HAVE THE TIME to adapt to the changes. One of the reasons the Chicken-Littles of global warming are being taken seriously *at all* is because the time-scale for species adaptation may simply be too short, if the global warming is actually occurring at the fast rate that lots of the data is suggesting (now, I didn’t say ALL of the data, dears, just LOTS of it).
Global warming is definitely happening. That much science is established to all but the silliest fanatics. WHY it’s happening, and how fast, is another matter.
If it’s happening utterly naturally, then thousands of species will either adapt or die off — and there’s nothing we can realistically do about it — including worry.
If it’s happening because of the excessively-destructive activities of humans, or is happening unnaturally FASTER because of excessively-destructive activities of us humans, then we may see a NEEDLESS AND WASTEFUL loss of many species, to our detriment.
Are there no species of animals you’d hate to see dying off? For ANY reason? Especially, though, if it turns out we could have kept them, but didn’t, purely because we despise liberals?

It’s so much easier (and more “fun”) to debate the real science questions with reasonably well-informed people, than to argue with silly anti-any-GW fanatics (who also still think cigarettes-causing-cancer is just a liberal plot to deny us our freedoms and to illegally control smokers).
