A freshly cleaned piece of zinc metal is placed on the cap of a negatively charged gold leaf electroscope…?
and illuminated with ultraviloet radiation.Explain why the leaves collapse.
Explain why the leaves do not collapse when:
(i) the zinc is covered by a piece of ordinary glass;
(ii) the zinc is illuminated with green light;
(iii) the electroscope is charged positively.
can someone explain this to me in an easy to understand way?
Martin is right with (i) and (ii).
With (iii), the real point is that electrons may still be expelled from the surface by UV, but the positive charge on the electroscope promptly attracts them back again (opposites attract, remember) and so nothing happens.
