did german soldiers in ww2 wear their medals in combat?

Peiper was a SS-Standartenführer, the equivalent of a Colonel. He did not take part in direct combat. It was common for high-ranking Germans who had been awarded the Iron Cross to wear it in the field. You can see photos of leaders like Rommel, von Manstein, and Paulus.
