Many species of gulls nest very close together on flat-topped islands, but herring gulls space their nests much farther apart. Kittiwakes nest in tiny pockets on the faces of cliffs. Suggest experiments to determine whether these birds are programmed to imprint on their own eggs or young. Which birds do you think will be found to imprint on their own eggs? Their own young? Why?

By imprinting you mean the ability for parents to recognize their young and the youngs ability to recognize the parents, correct?

Because the Herring gulls nest much farther apart I would think they only need to recognize the nest and its location. It can’t get confused because it’s nest is the only one in the area.

Birds that nest in large groups have to learn to imprint on their own young. The babies could wander off and get mixed up with the others, a parent has to know their own kid.

A group of “fake nests” could be placed around an individual Herring Gulls nest to see what their response is. Could the Herring Gull pick its own eggs out from the group?
