Crib Bedding Moves Into The Fashion Forefront

The bedding for a nursery crib did not evolve for decades. Limited pastel colors were the norm, and not even the occupants of the crib found it interesting. Some improvement came when generic prints of blocks and teddy bears were added, but it was not exactly a major change. The bumper pads, blankets, and sheets stayed basic and lacking in any kind of fashion sense.

Manufacturers spend millions to research what consumers want. Eventually, they discovered that parents were not satisfied with their choices when it came to decorating a nursery. They wanted a distinctive nursery for their baby, not a room that looked the same as every other nursery. These were people who decorated their entire house fashionably, and they wanted designer baby bedding for their latest addition. What was available was simply not good enough, so the manufacturers had to respond.

Many fashion designers soon found themselves creating a bedding collection for the crib as well as accessories that completed the theme. Manufacturers began packaging crib sheets, dust ruffles, coverlets, and bumper pads together, offering them at a lesser price than if each piece had to be purchased separately. Each piece is a perfect match to the rest. This eliminated the need for parents to have to search for items that would match and settling for things that were reasonably close.

The attention of designers most known for dramatic fashion innovation to the crib bedding market has brought many changes. They brought a knowledge of fabric combinations and unusual trims to their new projects. Cotton has not been abandoned, but other materials have been brought from the runway into the nursery. Soft pastels are still to be found, but bold, bright designs which capture the interest of even infants, are common.

Most bedding features a particular theme that is echoed in the accessories as well. Basic designs, such as teddy bears, alphabet blocks, fish, and animals have not been forsaken. They have, however, been reinterpreted. Polka dots, stripes, triangles, and checks are also available. More traditional designs that feature butterflies, flowers, cowboys, pirates, and ladybugs are perennial best sellers.

Nature scenes, such as seascapes, jungles, and the night sky, have carved a place for themselves in recent years. Themes tied to movies, mainly animated films, have taken their place in cribs. Disney baby bedding is also popular, and baby can drift off to sleep surrounded by images of the most well known Disney characters.

Much more than just a crib can be decorated now. Mobiles, rugs, wall hangings, lamps, and window curtains are available that continue the theme of the bedding. No longer does the nursery have to be the dullest room. It can now receive the decorating attention it deserves.
