Rain Chains: A New Offering by Brass Manufacturers

What do you notice about door knobs and locks? Door knobs and locks are no ordinary metals. They are made up of brass metals. Brasses are metal compounds. They are a solid mixture of copper and zinc. Brasses have reddish brown or yellowish shade. Some brass metals resemble gold. They have a smooth surface, making them less susceptible to friction. Because of their luster, durability, and aesthetic appeal, brass metals are used as adornments at home. Now, brass pipes do not only serve as door knobs and locks. They also serve as external decorations on the house façade.

Manufacturers have designed brass pipes and gutters as rain chains. Rain chains are interconnected rings of brass metal. Rings are connected by small holes. These holes allow downward flow of liquid from the top to the last ring of the chain. Rain chains are installed on the gutter outlet of a roof. Rain chains direct storm water from the roof to the drainage system.

The use of rain chains as a gutter waterway and downspout began in Japan. Cathedrals and monuments use rain chains to remove water and snow build-up on their roofs. European and American engineers have seen the advantages of using rain chains. Hence, they adapted the idea and produced their own styles and designs of rain chains.

Brass manufacturers typically assemble brass chains in rings. They link rings until they form a loop string. The loop string has a bigger opening on the top. This allows more water to flow on the loop. Some manufacturers use cup-style rain chain design. Cup-style rain chains look like a stack of plastic cups. Brass metals form a cup shape. Brass cups are placed on top of the other. Like rings, they are linked with opening on the joints. This allows downward flow of water.

Brass manufacturers say rain chains add decoration to a house. Instead of ordinary pipelines, downspouts resemble chain designs on the sidings. They conceal tarnishes on metal pipes. They appear designs on the façade of the house.

Rain chains are new innovations of brass manufacturers. Manufacturers continue to create more designs of rain gutters and downspouts. Recently, several households have installed rain chains in their roof gutters.
